From Sound to Vision - Basquiat and Music Workshop

“Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time.”

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT

Moon Lane Books

Led by artist Grace Thompson, children will be encouraged to create Basquiat-inspired loud and colourful expressive artworks during this two-hour class. Using paint, pens, and collage Children’s artworks will mirror the energy and structures of different music styles and incorporate the poetic application of words and musical symbols.

Basquiat's relationship with music was intimate and intricate. He played in a band and produced music, and many of his artworks feature references to jazz, blues, and hip-hop - and reflected the exciting emergence of punk, new-wave, and hip-hop in New York in the 1980's.

Music from Jazz influences, key figures, and legends like Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Charles Mingus will be played throughout the workshop to inspire children to mirror and express the feelings and visuals of the music within their creations. All of these innovative Jazz pianists and many others had a major influence on Basquiat's art-making process and visual style.
